ABOUT US

Hardware is hard. We built it anyway because we were tired of our wrists hurting.

BoardHand was founded in 2022 by a team of three ex-industrial automation engineers. After spending a decade building computer vision systems for robotic assembly lines—systems that tracked objects moving at high speeds with sub-millimeter precision—we looked at our desks and realized our own input devices hadn't meaningfully evolved since the 1980s.

The mouse is a crutch. It requires breaking context, shifting weight, and sacrificing the home-row typing position.

We spent 18 months iterating on the problem. We threw out ultrasonic tracking (too low resolution). We threw out capacitive sensing (too prone to interference and sweat). We settled on the exact same technology used in high-end industrial optical tracking: near-infrared global shutter sensors processing math directly on the silicon.

Our Philosophy

  • Zero Host Overhead We refuse to write a background daemon that consumes 5% of your CPU just to move a cursor. All processing happens on our hardware.
  • Absolute Durability The chassis is a solid block of aluminum. The switches are hot-swappable. The sensors are recessed and protected by Gorilla Glass. It is built to last a decade.
  • Standard Protocols We output standard USB HID packets. If a computer has a USB port, it understands our device without asking questions.
