BoardHand works out of the box, but taking five minutes to calibrate the tracking volume to your specific hand size and typing posture will dramatically improve accuracy.

Phase 1: Physical Connection

  1. Connect the provided USB-C cable to the port on the rear center of the BoardHand.
  2. Connect the other end to your host machine. (Ensure the port provides standard 500mA power).
  3. The firmware will initialize. The IR sensor status lights will pulse blue, then turn solid red indicating readiness.

Phase 2: Baseline Calibration

To teach the sensors your default resting hand position (the "deadzone" where cursor movement is ignored):

  1. Place your hands on the home row (ASDF JKL;) in your normal resting posture.
  2. Press and hold the `Fn` + `Spacebar` for 3 seconds.
  3. The LEDs will flash green. The DSP has now recorded your baseline Z-axis height.

Phase 3: Basic Gestures

Test the following to ensure the optical array is tracking correctly:

  • Cursor Move: Lift your right index finger roughly 15mm above the keys and move it laterally. The cursor should follow.
  • Left Click: While hovering, quickly pinch your index finger and thumb together.
  • Right Click: Pinch your middle finger and thumb together.
  • Scroll: Lift both the index and middle finger and move them vertically.

Note on lighting: If the cursor is jittery, ensure there is no direct, intense sunlight shining directly into the top edge of the keyboard chassis. Standard indoor lighting does not affect the IR sensors.
